Getting around Bishkek and the rest of Kyrgyzstan is quite affordable. Here is everything you need to know about local transport and navigation.

Arriving at Manas Airport (FRU)

Manas International Airport is located about 30 km (45 mins) from central Bishkek.

How to get to the city:

Yandex Go (taxi app): The most reliable option. Connect to the airport’s free Wi-Fi, open the Yandex Go app (iOS and Android), and order a car.
- A ride to the city usually costs 500–1,000 KGS (~$6–$12 / €5–€11), shown up front in the app.
- Pay in cash or with a local KGZ bank card. A foreign card can sometimes be linked but doesn’t always go through, so keep some som as backup.
- Watch for the airport “grey scheme”: a driver may accept your Yandex Go order and then message you to cancel it and pay extra in cash (“won’t go for that price”). Don’t cancel, don’t agree to go “off the app by the meter” with touts in the hall — people have been hit with 3,000–5,000 KGS bills on arrival. Stick to the in-app order.
Municipal Bus #153: A city bus running Asanbay ↔ Manas Airport via the centre (Bishkek-2, bus station), roughly every 20 minutes. Very cheap at 122 KGS cashless / 140 KGS cash (~$1.50). Tap a foreign Visa/Mastercard, a local Tulpar card, or pay the driver in cash.
Pre-booked transfer (Booking.com, etc.): For peace of mind, book a transfer in advance through a platform like Booking.com — more expensive than Yandex Go, but the price is fixed and the driver meets you with a sign.
Avoid unofficial drivers: You’ll be approached by touts the moment you leave baggage claim. Decline and use Yandex Go or Bus #153 to avoid being heavily overcharged.

Yandex Go is the absolute leader in Kyrgyzstan.

It works exactly like Uber.
Payment: cash always works; a local KGZ bank card links reliably. A foreign card can sometimes be linked but isn’t guaranteed — carry som as backup.
Fares within Bishkek are very cheap, typically ranging from 150 to 300 KGS ($2–$4) depending on the distance and surge pricing.
Pro Tip: Local taxi drivers rarely navigate by GPS pins on the map; they rely strictly on the text address. If your destination is tricky (like a specific courtyard or behind a barrier), write a short comment in the app describing the location.

Alternatives: SMS Taxi or Jorgo (usually require calling or using a local app, mostly cash-based).

Do not rely entirely on Google Maps in Kyrgyzstan.

Offline Maps: You can download the entire city map.
Public Transport: It shows exact routes for buses, trolleybuses, and marshrutkas (minibuses). You can track buses in real-time.
Business Directory: It has the most accurate information on entrances, working hours, and phone numbers for local businesses.
Another app for tracking public transport is Мой Город (My City).

Bishkek recently modernized its fleet with brand-new buses, replacing many of the old marshrutkas in the city center.

Cost: Fares are 17 KGS if paying by card, or 20 KGS in cash.
Payment: Cash is being phased out in municipal transport. It is highly recommended to buy a Tulpar card (a local transit card available at O!, Mega, or Beeline kiosks, and supermarkets for ~50 KGS) or pay contactlessly with a Visa/Mastercard.
Marshrutkas (private minibuses) still strictly run on cash (give the money to the driver upon entering).

Most intercity trips leave from the Bishkek bus station (Alma-Atinskaya 1/1), from early morning until around midday.

Almaty (Kazakhstan)	Bus 4–5 h via Korday border; shared taxi 3–4 h. A foreign-travel passport is required.

Scenic option: a seasonal panoramic train runs Bishkek-2 → Balykchy (Jun–Sep, from 150 KGS) through the dramatic Boom Gorge — slow but a trip in itself.
