Where to Go and What to See
Kyrgyzstan is 90% mountains, and its best sights are outdoors: alpine lakes, red-rock canyons, high pastures dotted with yurts, and Silk Road ruins. Almost everything below is within a few hours of Bishkek. For how to book tours and guides, see Tours and English Guides.
🌊 Lake Issyk-Kul
The country’s headline destination — the world’s second-largest alpine lake, 1,608 m above sea level, 180 km long, and it never freezes. About 3–4 hours from Bishkek.
- North shore (Cholpon-Ata, Bosteri): the resort strip — sandy beaches, sanatoriums, water parks, nightlife. Best for a first visit and family beach time. Swimming season is mid-July to late August (water 22–24°C); September is warm and quiet.
- South & east shore (Karakol side): quieter, wilder, more scenic — the base for mountain trekking.
- Don’t miss: the Cholpon-Ata petroglyphs (thousands of Bronze Age rock carvings in an open field by the road) and, on the way in, the dramatic Boom Gorge.

High-altitude sun plus reflection off the water burns fast — SPF 50+ is essential, even on cloudy days. The water is slightly saline (don’t drink it) and has small, harmless jellyfish.
🏔️ Ala-Archa National Park
The easiest taste of the Tien Shan — a spruce-and-granite gorge just 40 km from Bishkek, doable as a half-day trip.
- Waterfall trail: the popular route, ~4 km each way, ~700 m of climb through pine and juniper forest.
- Ratzek Hut: a tougher 6.5 km / 1,200 m climb, used as an alpinist base camp.
- Access: since May 2025, ordinary petrol/diesel cars are not allowed inside — park at the checkpoint and continue on foot (entry ~200 som) or take the free electric shuttle.
⛰️ Karakol and the eastern mountains
The main town on the east of the lake and the gateway to the high Tien Shan.
- Jeti-Oguz — the “Seven Bulls” red sandstone cliffs.
- Skazka (“Fairytale”) Canyon — red clay formations stretching ~5 km, one of the most photogenic spots in the country, ~30 km west of Karakol.
- Altyn-Arashan — hot springs reached by a 2–3 day trek or a horse ride from Karakol.
- In winter, Karakol Ski Base is the country’s best-known resort.
🐎 Song-Kol
A vast high-pasture lake at ~3,000 m, ringed by summer yurt camps and horse herds — the classic place to experience nomadic life: stay in a yurt, ride, and see the stars with no light pollution. Accessible roughly June–September only; snow closes the passes the rest of the year. Usually visited as an overnight or multi-day trip with an operator.
🏛️ Burana Tower & the Silk Road
About 80 km east of Bishkek, the Burana Tower is an 11th-century minaret marking Balasagun, a Karakhanid capital, surrounded by a field of balbal stone figures. It pairs well with the nearby ruins of Nevaket and Suyab on a Silk Road day trip.
🌆 Bishkek itself
A green, low-rise Soviet-planned capital that rewards slow wandering rather than checklist sightseeing:
- Ala-Too Square, the State History Museum, Oak Park (open-air sculpture), and Osh Bazaar for the full sensory market experience.
- Hidden side: ~4 km of street-art in the concrete YuBChK canal beds, large murals by local crews (DOXA, Basicolors), and pheasants in the Botanical Garden.

🏙️ Osh (the south)
Kyrgyzstan’s second city and one of Central Asia’s oldest, ~3,000 years old. Its centrepiece is Sulaiman-Too, a sacred mountain and UNESCO World Heritage site rising straight out of the city, with a museum built into the rock and sweeping views. Osh is also the natural launch point for the Pamir Highway and Lenin Peak base camp.
⚠️ Border-zone permits
Some of the most spectacular spots sit in restricted border areas and require a permit arranged 5–10 working days in advance (any licensed operator can do it). These include:
- Kel-Suu lake (Naryn region)
- Sary-Jaz valley and the Khan Tengri / Pobeda peaks
- Lenin Peak base camp
- The Sary-Too rainbow mountains
Plan these ahead — you will be turned back at the checkpoint without the paperwork.
