Tours and English Guides

Kyrgyzstan is famous for nomadic culture, alpine lakes and big mountains — and it has a well-developed network of clubs and operators that run everything “turnkey” (transport, guide, permits). For where to actually go, see Where to Go and What to See.

🥾 Weekend-hike clubs and tour operators

These clubs run regular group trips into the gorges and to the lakes. The fastest way to find this week’s schedule is their Instagram or Telegram, usually posted at the start of the week.

Trekking Union of Kyrgyzstan (TUK) — tuk.kg. A long-established non-profit that has run very affordable, professionally guided weekend hikes for 20+ years. Certified instructors, good for beginners and experienced hikers alike. WhatsApp: +996 556 005 604.
InTourists — a large, reliable company running day hikes (Ala-Archa, Alamedin, Kegety) and multi-day trips nationwide, with comfortable transport. Telegram · WhatsApp +996 700 466 220.
Kettik — t.me/kettik_kg. The biggest, cheapest youth operator; a huge choice every weekend and a branch in Osh. Because of the volume, reviews are mixed — good for cheap transport and basic support. WhatsApp +996 707 122 222.
Where.KG — t.me/clubgdekg. One of the highest-rated clubs in expat chats: well organised, punctual, thoughtful routes.
Kg.country — t.me/kgcountry. Comfortable, scenic routes; occasionally criticised for logistics, so confirm details in advance.
Alpine Club Bishkek — budget club trips year-round, led by professional mountaineers, with gear rental on site. Contact Ravil on WhatsApp +996 555 252 534.

For guaranteed English: the big clubs cater mostly to a Russian-speaking crowd, so state that you need an English-speaking guide when you book. Established operators (TUK, InTourists) and Community-Based Tourism (CBT) offices in towns like Karakol, Kochkor and Naryn are the most reliable for English service and for arranging homestays, horses and yurt camps.

⛷️ Winter & skiing

Ski season runs from late December to March (best snow usually January–February).

Chunkurchak — the nearest resort, 30–40 min from Bishkek; good for beginners and intermediates, 5 chairlifts. Gear rental available on site.
Kashka-Suu / Kashkulak — two neighbouring bases in one gorge (don’t mix up the entrances), reachable by marshrutka #265.
Karakol — the biggest resort in Central Asia (6–7 hours away), with runs of every level and serious freeride; for intermediates and up.

Getting there without a car: clubs (Kettik, InTourists, Mount Club) run Sprinter shuttles to the nearest bases (depart ~8:00, return ~17:00–18:00). Find a seat or carpool in Bishkek Snow and Snow KG. Rent skis/board more cheaply in Bishkek (Extremal, Ski House on Almatinskaya).

Standard travel insurance usually excludes skiing — add a “winter sports” option before you ride.

🧭 Doing it on your own

You don’t always need a tour. Many gorges are a Yandex Go ride away for a self-guided day:

Ala-Archa National Park — the waterfall trail is well-marked; see Where to Go and What to See.
Alamedin gorge and Chunkurchak — easy family valleys with hot springs, hanging bridges and picnic spots; marshrutka #265 also reaches them.
Bikes & horses: rent mountain bikes at Velomesto (Bishkek); horse rides available near Koi-Tash / Alamedin.

If you go without a guide, download offline maps (2GIS/Maps.me), start early, and remember signal drops out a few km into the gorges.

🧭 Private and specialist guides

If you prefer private 4×4 trips or bespoke itineraries, individual guides operate on WhatsApp and Telegram. One well-regarded expat pick is Leyla (@leylautrilla), who runs atmospheric custom tours. For historical/archaeological Silk Road day trips, the Alpine Club runs a tour led by a practising historian-archaeologist.

⚠️ Border-zone permits

Several top spots (Kel-Suu, Sary-Jaz, Lenin Peak base camp, the Sary-Too rainbow mountains) lie in restricted border areas and need a permit arranged 5–10 working days ahead. Any licensed operator — or Ravil at the Alpine Club — can process it. You will be refused entry at the checkpoint without it.
