Shopping in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek covers the whole range — from European-style malls to legendary Central Asian bazaars. Prices are low by Western standards, and cash (som) is king at the markets, while malls and supermarkets take cards.

🛍️ Bazaars

The markets are the real experience — huge, cheap, and central to daily life. Bargaining is expected at the clothing and goods markets (not at food stalls). Go in the morning, keep an eye on your wallet, and bring cash.

Osh Bazaar — the main in-city food market and the best place for fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, dried fruit, local cheeses and spices. Noticeably cheaper and fresher than supermarkets. Also has fish rows and household goods.
Dordoi Bazaar — one of the largest wholesale markets in Central Asia (100+ hectares), built from stacked shipping containers. Clothing, shoes, textiles, homeware, sports and ski gear at wholesale prices. Open roughly 06:00 to 14:00–15:00 — come early on a weekday. Getting there: marshrutka from the centre, or a taxi (~300–500 som).
Madina — the fabric-and-tailoring market: textiles, trims, and cheap ready-made clothes.
Orto-Sai & Alamedin bazaars — neighbourhood markets, handy for everyday food and basics without going downtown.

🧶 Souvenirs & local crafts

Kyrgyzstan’s signature crafts make the best gifts:

Shyrdak / ala-kiyiz — hand-felted wool rugs in bold nomadic patterns.
Kalpak — the traditional white felt hat.
Felt goods — slippers, bags, toys, yurt-shaped ornaments.
Honey, dried fruit and nuts — excellent local mountain honey.

Buy these at Osh Bazaar, at Tsum (ЦУМ) “Aichurek” department store in the centre, or at craft boutiques and the CBT/Altyn Kol women’s craft outlets. For hand-made felt, buying direct from cooperatives (especially around Kochkor and Karakol) supports the makers and gets you the real thing.

🏬 Malls (European format)

For brand clothing, cinemas and food courts:

Asia Mall (Chyngyz Aitmatov 3) — the biggest and most modern: 100+ shops, the largest food court, a Globus supermarket, cinema and kids’ zones.
Bishkek Park (Kievskaya 148) — central, strong on Turkish fashion brands (Mango, LC Waikiki, Koton), plus an ice rink and bowling.
Dordoi Plaza (Ibraimova 115/2) — premium, 200+ shops, Adidas/Nike, an 8-screen cinema with IMAX.
GUM “Chynar” (Chuy Ave 92) — central, many local shops and a food court.

🛒 Supermarkets

Globus — the largest chain and the main reference point for expats: imported goods, big meat and fish sections, European brands. Local trout is often sold live from tanks and cleaned for free.
Narodny — the most widespread neighbourhood chain.
Asia, Azbuka — convenient local chains in residential areas.

For fresh produce, bazaars beat supermarkets on price, freshness and taste. You rarely need to travel far — most residential blocks have a small produce stall, and every district has its own little market.

💻 Electronics & tech

DNS (dns-shop.kg) — the most popular chain: enormous range, a genuinely useful catalogue site with reviews and filters, solid warranty.
Planeta Electroniki (planeta.kg) — long-standing local chain with its own service centre.
Technodom / Sulpak — large Kazakh chains, present in the malls.
Apple: Asia Store (asiastore.kg) is the only Apple Authorized Reseller (official global warranty); iStore (istore.kg) is popular with expats.
PC parts & repairs: Enter.kg, Ultra.kg, CompShop and the “repair floor” (6th) of the old Tsum for fast, cheap fixes.

At Tsum’s ground floor and small phone stalls, prices are lower but check the serial number and insist on a warranty slip — refurbished units are sometimes sold as new.

📦 Online marketplaces

lalafo.kg — the main classifieds site (new and used goods, the local Craigslist).
